San Rafael

Located less than 30 minutes by bus from Guatapé, San Rafael is a typical Antioquian small town with a pleasant central plaza, a nice church, and friendly locals eager to talk to foreigners. The main attractions of the area, however, are outside of town. The best part about San Rafael is getting there from Guatapé. The journey offers a spectacular 20km descent along a well-paved, low-traffic highway, with amazing views of the sprawling valley and Rio Guatapé below. Don’t forget your bathing suit – the weather gets hot as you descend into the valley and there are several beautiful balnearios (river swimming holes) along the way, including some where cliff-jumping is possible. The road from Guatapé to San Rafael is ideal for a one-way bike ride (part of the route was used for the cycling leg of the Triathlon during the 2010 South American Games).  Colombia Eco Tours can arrange bike rentals and return transportation for you and your bike.

Note: The last return bus from San Rafael to Guatapé is at 5:30pm. (Buy tickets in advance on weekends and holidays)
